ILFORD PHOTO has a long history in the manufacture of scientific photographic products. Although these products are mainly used in scientific research and materials science, they are occasionally used in creative applications.
The products can be split into 3 categories:
Nuclear Emulsion
These products are sold as bottles of emulsion in gel form allowing users to coat their own materials. They are primarily used to record ionising radiation and charged particles and are most commonly found in Autoradiography and Particle Physics. Their sensitivity to blue light has however led to their use in a number of creative applications.
L4 Plates
These products consist of Nuclear Emulsion coated onto glass. Their most important application is X-ray diffraction topography, however the sensitivity of the emulsion to blue light allows high contrast images to be recorded onto glass for technical and creative applications.
Q Plates
Specifically intended for the detection of heavy ions found in mass spectrography, the emulsion is coated onto glass by a method that concentrates the silver halide crystals on the surface of the emulsion. This also makes them useful in applications where short wavelength radiation is to be detected.
